This means it works by blocking the reabsorption (reuptake) of norepinephrine in the brain. When norepinephrine is released into the synapse (the space between nerve cells), it binds to receptors on the receiving nerve cell, transmitting a signal. After this signal is transmitted, norepinephrine is normally reabsorbed back into the releasing nerve cell through a process called reuptake. Atomoxetine inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine, which results in more norepinephrine being available in the synapse for a longer period. This increased availability of norepinephrine enhances the neurotransmission of signals related to attention and focus. By increasing norepinephrine levels in the brain, atomoxetine helps to improve attention span, reduce impulsivity, and enhance overall focus.
